There’s nothing quite like Christmas in the Sierras. The mountain air can be cold, but it’s amazingly crisp and clear. Snow lies beautifully on the pine and oak trees. And the small mountain towns offer plenty to do and see, without the rush and bustle of a large city.
The season will start in Sonora this year, just east on Highway 108. The town’s annual Christmas Craft and Music Festival will run from Nov. 25 to 27 this year at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds. A Christmas parade in downtown Sonora will celebrate the first day of the festivities. The 42-year-old tradition will feature 150 craft artists, street performers, live music, costumed “elves,” caroling, kitchens and bakery stands, and more.
Downtown Sonora is also a great place to do Christmas shopping. Full of locally owned boutiques, antique stores, art galleries and emporiums, there are plenty of gifts you won’t find elsewhere.
Many cities bring in trees to decorate in their downtown areas, but that’s not the case in Twain Harte. We have a 150-foot-tall, living tree that serves as our Christmas decor. Each year, a Christmas Carol Sing-Along is held under the town’s arches. The tree is lit, and the parade to welcome in the season begins. This year’s event will be held Dec. 2, and Santa is due to make an appearance.
The same weekend, Sounds of the Season will be held at the Sonora Opera Hall. The concert will be presented by the Columbia College Community Chorus.
There are also events that carry on all season, like ice skating in the Long Barn and playing in the snow.
The best way to enjoy the Christmas spirit, though, is relaxing with family and friends in our cozy bed and breakfast. McCaffrey House is decorated each Christmas with a tall tree and a model train. Relax near the fireplace with our other guests as you enjoy snacks, hot drinks or a glass of wine, and enjoy the holiday ambiance.
